Mrs. Mildred J. Karraker was born at Pruntytown, WV, to Oral Justus and Clara Bartlett Jones on Feb. 18, 1922 and passed on at Aiken Regional Medical Center Feb. 23, 2011, at the age of 89. She was graduated from Grafton WVA High School and Fairmont WVA State College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics, and from Columbia University NYC with a Master of Science. She was a registered dietician at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, MD. She had additional graduate training at the University of California, Berkeley where she married David G. Karraker on June 19, 1948; they were married for 62 years. Mildred was a member of St. John?s United Methodist Church, a past president of Town and Country, a past board member of the American Cancer Society, the Tri-Development Center, and the Aiken-Barnwell Mental Health Center. She was a docent at the Aiken Historical Society and a member of the Friends of the State Museum, and Friends of the Aiken Library. For many years she was a Girl Scout leader, and she also worked as a reading improvement teacher. She was a cheerful, happy lady with many friends and interests. For 50 years she was member of ?The Bridge Club,? a weekly bridge group that originated among neighboring ladies in the days when she lived in Crosland Park. She rarely failed to send cards for birthdays, anniversaries and notes of appreciation for performances that pleased her. Mildred loved the ocean, bird-watching, her pet cats, and crossword puzzles. Survivors include her husband, David; her three children: Mark Meg Karraker, of Minneapolis, MN; Emily Ken Owens of Downers Grove, IL; Frances Jim French of San Diego, CA, six granddaughters, Amelia Karraker, Miriam Karraker, Hannah Owens, Frances Owens, Madeline French, and Rosemary French. The family will receive friends from 4pm to 6pm Saturday, February 26, 2011 at GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER, 211 Park Avenue, SW, Aiken. A celebration of er life will be held at St. John?s United Methodist Church at 3pm on Sunday, February 27, 2011.
