NEW ELLENTON- Georgiana May Jack Alexander died Sunday, September 12, 2010 at her home at the age of 86 years, 7 months, 20 days. Born January 23, 1924 in Amorita, OK, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Jack and Nettie Covey Jack. Georgiana was raised on a wheat and cattle ranch in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma. During the 1893 Cherokee Land Run, her family had been pioneer homesteaders. Migrating to Los Angeles, CA during the Dust Bowl years and the Great Depression of the 1930's, the family returned to the farm in Oklahoma prior to World War II. A superior student, Georgiana graduated Valedictorian from Amorita High School in 1942 and attended Northwestern State College in Alva, OK. During World War II, Georgiana's love of country inspired her to join the Armed Forces in 1944. She was one of the youngest women to hold the rank of First Sergeant in the Women's Army Corp WAC. She commandeered her squadron at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, GA until 1946. While in the Army, Georgiana met and married Wallace Franklin Alexander deceased, in August of 1946. The couple retuned to Ellenton, SC to begin their lives together. With the building and development of the Savannah River Plant SRP during the 1950's, the family relocated to New Ellenton, SC. The purpose of the SRP site was to refine nuclear materials for deployment in nuclear weapons. Georgiana was employed as an Accountant for thirty-six years at SRP before retiring in 1989. Serving as Adult Bible Studies teacher and bookkeeper, Georgiana was instrumental in the growth and life of the Nazarene Church in New Ellenton and remained active in the Stonecroft Christian Women's Group. Inquisitive about the world and ideas, Georgiana was an avid reader and had traveled throughout many parts of the world with family and friends. Her love of her family took precedence in her life. She will be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Alexander is survived by her son Alan W. Alexander and his spouse Judy Alexander of Columbia, SC and two daughters, Susan A. LaForge and her spouse Buddy LaForge of Louisville, KY, and Janette S. Alexander of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Ross and spouse Mike Ross of Portland, OR, Alexandra J. Laforge of San Francisco, CA, Kelly R. Laforge of Tuscaloosa, AL, Covey C. Alexander of Charleston, SC and A. Wayne Alexander, II of Columbia, SC. Mrs. Alexander also has three brothers, Jack Jack of Edmond, OK, Paul E. Jack deceased, Cecil D Jack deceased. Gratitude and love to Debbie Bryson-Damon and Milton Till, you are family as well. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004, and/or the New Life Church of the Nazarene, PO Box 481, New Ellenton, SC, 29809. Friends and family are welcome to attend the visitation on Friday, September 17, 2010 from 6:00pm- 8:00pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave, SW, Aiken. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 11:00 at the New Ellenton Church of the Nazarene, in New Ellenton, SC. A luncheon will follow at the church fellowship hall. The graveside service will be held at 2:00pm at the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Graniteville, SC.
