Mrs. Betty Powell Thornton, 85, of Aiken SC, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2014. A Daughter of the late Russell Powell and Ellie Stone Powell, she was born in Honea Path SC, and lived in Aiken SC for the last 50 years. Mrs. Thornton retired as a supervisor from Harvey Hubbell with over 21 years of faithful service to the company. Betty was also a proud homemaker and an excellent cook. She was a talented gardener and enjoyed her flowers and vegetable garden. She was a quiet, sweet and gentle soul, and was a wonderful wife and mother. Survivors include her daughters; Gail Smith (Garry) of Dawsonville GA, Sue Boatright (Wayne) of Aiken SC, and Kay Stanley (Charles) of Aiken SC. Mrs. Thornton is also survived by her five grandchildren; Jason Robinson, Amy Boatright (Stan) Charlie Stanley (Leah) Cecilia George (David) and Melissa Deets (B.J.) as well as eleven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years Ford McRee Thornton Jr., a brother; Earl Powell and a sister Nancy McDowell. A memorial service will be held at GEORGE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 211 Park Ave SW, Aiken SC 29801 on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at 4 PM. A visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of HarborChase of Aiken-Assisted Living and Memory Care for the excellent care they provided.
