Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Valda Nell Armistead Pirkle will take place on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 2:00pm at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, GA, with Dr. Rev. George Howle officiating. Memorial donations may be directed to St. John's United Methodist Church, 104 Newberry St. NW Aiken, SC 29801 or The Children's Department of the Aiken County Library, 314 Chesterfield St. South, Aiken, SC 29801. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, is assisting the family. Mrs. Pirkle, of Aiken, SC, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers, eight days after the death of her husband of sixty-eight years, E. C. Pirkle, on January 12th. Born in Dothan, AL, and reared in Atlanta, GA, she was the daughter of the late Ben S. Armistead, Sr. and Mamie Lou Greene Armistead. She was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. Before moving to Aiken in 1993, she had lived in Gainesville, FL, where she was a dedicated volunteer in the church nursery at First United Methodist Church. She was currently a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Aiken, SC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three bothers; Ben S. Armistead, Jr., William S. Armistead and Chester Armistead. She is survived by two sons; William A. Rachel Pirkle, Aiken, SC and Fredric L. Sandra Pirkle, St. Augustine, FL. She is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
