Obituary of Mary Ann Mackey

Mary Ann Mackey joined her Lord and departed family and friends on August 20, 2007. Those who will follow her later include her loving husband of forty years, Halkard Mackey, Jr., and the joy of her life, Samantha Mackey Hillaire. Mary was born to Amy Newton on March 16, 1943 in Hickory, North Carolina. She excelled academically at Hildebran High School where she also performed as chief majorette. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she taught school in Statesville and Charlotte, NC. Later she was Librarian for the Education Library, University of Tennessee at Knoxville. After several years as a homemaker in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Mary returned to the South with her family. There she furthered her education, obtaining a Master's of Library Science from the University of South Carolina at Columbia and both North and South Carolina Real Estate Broker's Licenses. Mary and her husband then purchased the White House Inn in Aiken, SC, where they entertained guests and performed weddings. She loved to travel, voyaging extensively throughout the United States and Germany, England, France, Switzerland, and Italy. She requested that memorials be sent either to the Cornerstone Baptist Church Building Fund, 100 Cornerstone Drive, Aiken, SC, 29801 or Trinity Lutheran Home, 213 Laurens Street, NW, Aiken, SC, 29801. A memorial service will be conducted at Cornerstone Baptist Church on Saturday August 25 at 2 PM. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service. A private interment is planned in North Carolina. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Aiken, SC, is assisting with the arrangements.
