You know, I only met him once, but he was one of those people that made an immediate impression on you, and I never forgot him. You could just tell that he was special. I took my young son to the gym atOdell Weeks for playtime several years ago and we met Mike and Tybee that day. Tybee and my son are the same age, I think. The next week, we met Elenita when she took Tybee to the gym to play. Elenita & Tybee, I'm so very sorry for your loss. I'm grateful to have met you all and pray for your comfort and peace.

I met Mike many years ago. His wife and my wife are friends. He came to my home and played my guitar. My daughter, two years old, had a surprised look on her face - Mike Stewart played much, much better than her father. She had never heard that guitar sound like that.
I visited him in his home when he lived in Nashville. Mike's guitar was missing one string. On the next visit, I brought him a set of strings. Mike had the biggest laugh. He always spoke of his song "Boiled Peanuts."
A great person, with unbelievable talent. The world is a better place because of Mike Stewart.

What a guy! Every time I spoke with Mike in Nashville, Savannah, or when he went back home, I came away happy. Several years ago, I was with Sons of the Beach and we were doing a tribute to Clifford Curry. Mike wanted to perform at the show. He hadn't been onstage in several years, but showed up, dressed out, and was just as great as I'm sure he ever was years ago. A Soul Man all of his life.
God loves Mike and all of his family and will hold you close in these days. I loved him, too.
Blessings,

I met Mike back in 1969 when I became a drummer for a band that he, Archie Jordan and Eddie Hebert had formed. We called ourselves Mike Stewart and the Paramounts. I agree with the previous poster that said that he understood cool when he met Mike...oh how true it was. He was also just about the nicest, most generous, talented, and peace-loving human being I'd ever met. Even though my experience with Mike was brief, he has always stuck with me through the years. I left the south way back when, but I always hoped that I would see Mike again. I guess someday I will. Love you man!

The infectious energy that Uncle Mike had continued even in his funeral service. What a wonderful tribute to a very talented, energetic, fun loving person. Meeting you for the first time as a 10yr. old I still remember laughing at you as you sat tapping on the table while eating - you just couldn't stay still. Music was in your blood and you were so wonderful at sharing your talents with so many. You will be very missed by so many but we were blessed to know you, listen to your talents, and love you. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mike's passing. I was the keyboard player with "The Intruders" back in the day and Mike was my friend and musical mentor. Let the history books show that in 1967 during Sun-Fun Week at Myrtle Beach, The Intruders played for the whole week and the girls lined up three deep at the stage to see Mike and Arhcie?...what a week that was! He was an amazing musical talent and Wanda and I are proud to have known him.

As kid, I used stand by the back door of teen town and watch the Intruders, as their singing and playing was my musical training. Last fall I saw him in the church parking lot along with Elenita and Tybee as he came up to me and said that we needed to get together to do some recording. I told Bill Bentley about it the next day and it took a while, but in December Bill got with Mike and started up with a song idea and I had the privilege of playing some bass lines on one of the last songs Mike recorded. It is sad that I didn't get to talk with him as he wasn't in the studio the day I recorded my part, making that day in parking lot the last time I saw him. The lesson being, just make sure you tell your friends and family that you love them, as it says in scripture "For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers and the flower fades away, But the word of the Lord endures for ever. God bless you and your family.

Each time I've been at our AHS reunions, I have missed seeing Mike when he couldn't attend. Either 5 or 10 years ago, he had planned to be there playing with a reconstituted Intruders. Seems he was having a baby at the time and couldn't make it! So I missed him then, and I will miss him in the future. He was always the 'funnest' to be around. I remember he'd drive up in my driveway on that motorcycle of his, and we would just hang out there talking and being teenagers. Twice I leaned against the exhaust pipe and I still have two burn scars almost super-imposed to remind me of him and those great days growing up in College Acres, Aiken, SC, in the '60's. My thoughts and prayers to the family. To his wife and family, be peaceful in the fact that Mike touched the lives of so many people in so many ways, from Aiken days to Nashville days, and on. He will be missed by so many.

We all have our hero's and Mike was a hero to many. He helped unite the high school classes of the late 60's and break down the barriers of the age differences. We danced to his music and sang along with him while he entertained on stage. On Friday and Saturday nights, Mike led the charge to the Sno-Cap Drive In and then to the City Billiards to extend the pleasures of being a teenager. I personally thank Mike and the rest of his comrades for making that era the time of my life. May God be with his family and welcome Mike to an audience larger than he has ever performed for.

When Archie's wife called Saturday morning, I could sense something strained in her voice and she related the untimely passing of Mike of Friday. As I have perused the tributes to him, I recognize many of my former classmates sending their prayes and thoughts to his family and I add mine. Mike was a consummate performer and made the big time in Nashville. I was proud to know him as a friend. I played bass for the Intruders and am reminded of the many, many "gigs" the band played on Friday nights after the ball games, the trips to Myrtle Beach and Charleston which to me were just like going to Vegas --- what we did there, stays there.

Mike was one of the most unassuming people I have ever known. A gentle giant, with a love for music that was infectious. He was the kind of person who could show up anywhere and blend in so easily he would make everyone feel at home, yet his absence is immediately recognized.
When I moved back from Nashville,
I had an emptiness and missed so many people. When I met Mike, he was a kindred spirit...we could talk for hours about music and Nashville, and I enjoyed every second of it. He was everybody's friend. He was a gifted, talented artist, a songwriter who connected with more people than one could ever know...and such a sweet soul.
Elenita, Tybee, Tamla, and family -Mike made us all richer by his smile, his music, and sharing his life with us. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time. May God Bless you and comfort you. He will be missed.

When Archie and Mike united with our band from Sumter in the late 60's, I didn't have any idea what to expect, but came to find out we now were part of the most talented musicians I'd ever been with. Mike was without, the most gifted entertainer I have ever seen. The voice, charisma, charm, personality, talent, what can I say. He was the best. He could have the whole audience in the palm of his hand giving the most enjoyable time to all. His musical style and talent has made the greatest impact in my music today. I never knew Mike to have an enemy. He loved and respected all people. I came from a somewhat racist enviornment during intergration etc. but Mike showed me how to respect and love all people. He was a true civil rights leader. Mike, I look forward to see you again. Could you see about saving me a spot beside Old Gabriel and maybe we'll strike up "Together".

He treasured his wife Elena and son Tybee, and would brag on them incessantly. He was so proud of them and loved them both enormously, as we loved him enormously.

More than anyone I have ever met, Mike showed us how to throw ourselves completely into music. He was the consummate showman and an absolute leader, on stage, on the football field, and even in the halls at AHS. I know of 3 recordings of Mike and the Intruders: a professional demo which was done with the original personnel on the stage at old Aiken Junior High, probably in the summer of 1966; one I made at the Battle of the Bands at Teen Town, summer of 1967, and one I made at Williston Senior Prom in the spring of 1968. Sadly, I cannot locate my copy of the first 2, although they may still exist. Mike made listening to the Intruders a joyful experience, and he carried his musicality all the way to the end. "If you believe in forever, Then life is just a one-night stand; If there's a rock and roll heaven,Well you know they've got a hell of a band. It just got a lot better. You will be missed, Mike. YOU made so many great memories, I recall the studio sessions and the smile and laughter shared as we were 'shagging", when you told me you did not know how, I gave you a quick lesson, and knew then, what you were all about, WE grew up together, and as we grew, we went out ways,, but always to come back and have those moments of laughter shared, moments shared, love unconditional. May your family understand the legacy you have given us all. Such a GIFT, from such a wonderful man, who will be missed beyond mere words.

I've known Mike since I was 15 years old and watched from a distance as a lowly AHS freshman. Later, I had the opportunity to know, admire, enjoy and appreciate his fabulous talent. Only James Brown could do James Brown better...can still close my eyes and relive the routine...amazing. He was among a very talented young group of guys that were more fun to watch, listen and dance to at Aiken Teen Town than more famous bands. The Intruders were our band in our town at our time. How lucky we were! Mike, Stewart and Archie all achieved the mostly elusive dream of making it in Music City. My condolences and prayers to Mike's wife and son Tybee. May you find comfort in memories of Mike and his love for you. RIP our friend.

What can I say? You could not be a Aiken High Student in the early 60's and not know the Intruders and Mike.
He was a friend of my brothers and had the drive to prevail above anything else.
Mike is a person who will always be rememberd by any who knew of him or him personally.
My prayers for his family.May they feel the comfort of Our Father and know of His love and strengh.

Mike was a College Acres kid along with lots of us. WE grew up in a special place and time. But Mike was one the unique people who made Aiken what it was "back in the day". His love of music and talent knew no bounds and will be greatly missed. Mike was alway kind to me with his time and willingness to show me how to play the guitar and loved his Triumip 650. Mike will be dearly missed. My prayers are with the family in their time of grief. I know Mike will be above playing his music to all that gather.............
