Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Veronica Marion Nugent Bailey will be celebrated Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at 10 AM at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Aiken, SC with Reverend Venancio Amidar celebrant. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Aiken, SC. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 2, 2005 from 1:30-3:00 PM at George Funeral Homes, Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken, SC. A Christian wake service will be held at 6:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home and the family will receive friends following the wake service until 8:00 PM. Mrs. Bailey, 90, of Aiken, SC, died Saturday, afternoon, July 30, 2005 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Born on Staten Island, NY, a daughter of the late James F. and Anna Lanahan Nugent, she and her late husband Eugene, who preceded her in death in 1992, retired to Aiken, SC in 1970. Mrs. Bailey was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church where she served, as CO-President of the Women?s Club for several years, was A CCD teacher and a Eucharistic Minister, and member of the choir. Mrs. Bailey graduated from Curtis High School in 1931 and attended Hunter College. She was secretary to the alumni Director of Wagner College and also served as Executive Assistant in NYC during her working career. Since 2001 Mrs. Bailey had resided at Eden Gardens where she continued with her volunteering and was active with the Red Cross and was named Woman of the Year in 2002. Although deaf since late in life, she continued to be interested in those around her as well as in developments in current events. She is survived by a son, Kenneth L. Bailey, and wife, Camille, Aiken, SC; daughters, Veronica Phillips, and husband, Kenneth, Naples, FL and Maureen MacEvoy, husband, Joseph Bliss, Matawan, NJ; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Thomas Bailey, brothers, Leonard and James F. Nugent, and sister, Virginia Nugent Deisley.
