Obituary of Alfred Jennings

Mr. Alfred Jennings, 83, of Aiken, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Lexington Extended Care Center. Visitation will take place today, from 12-1 pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken. Interment will follow at 1:30 at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A memorial service celebrating his life will follow at 2:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Aiken with Rev. Holly Shoaf-O'Kula and Rev. Martha Ebel officiating. Memorial donations may be directed to the American Heart Association or to the charity of one's choice.
A son of the late Alfred Stonebraker and Ida Maack Jennings, he was born in St. Louis, MO and had lived in Schenectady, NY before moving to Aiken in 1954. A chemical engineer, he earned his PhD at Washington Univ. and worked his entire career with DuPont, retiring from the Savannah River Lab in 1984. He served his Country in the United States Army at the end of WW II. Al was a long time member and officer of First Presbyterian Church. Over the years, he spent countless hours volunteering at the church and ACTS. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and was an excellent example of humble service to others.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Carol R. Jennings, who died in 1994.
Mr. Jennings is survived by two sons; David Jennings, Atlanta, GA and Donald Jennings, Perry Hall, MD, two daughters; Susan Cole, Greer, SC and Karen Hiltz, Lexington, SC, a grandson; Patrick Hiltz, Richmond, VA, four granddaughters; Bethany Funk, Hope Mills, NC, Michelle Stairs, Ontario, NY, Emily Hiltz, Lexington, SC and Amelia Jennings, Perry Hall, MD and one great-granddaughter; Emma Funk, Hope Mills, NC.
