Larry Stewart, 71, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at his home. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 PM Saturday, Feb. 14 at Millbrook Baptist Church and the funeral service will begin at 2 PM with Chief Carroll Busbee (Ret.). Chief Dwayne Courtney, Col. Bert Pridgen, and song writer Archie Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Chief Charles Barranco, Sheriff Michael Hunt, Chief Det. Bob Hardt (Ret.), Detective Wendell Hall (Ret.), Chief Gregg Stanford, and Det. Morris Deason (Ret.). Hononary Pallbearers will be members of the Aiken Department of Public Safety. Larry was employed as a Police Officer with the Aiken Department of Public Safety in Aiken, SC for a period of thirty years, before retiring on September 30, 1999. He was hired in May of 1970 as an officer in the Uniform Patrol Division. In 1977, he was promoted to Sergeant. He held that positon for three years until his promotion to Lieutenant in 1980. In 1984, he was promoted to the Investigative Division as a detective. After three years, he was Senior Detective and ran the day to day operation of the division in the absence of Chief Detective. Larry was cross trained at the Department of Public Safety and certified in both fighting fire operations, as well as Police Operations. He was state certified in both as a supervisor. He was certified as a medical "First Responder" and certified yearly by the department and the Red Cross in the use of C.P.R. Larry was fondly called the "Grand Poo Bah" by his fellow officers. He leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, Sherrie Boyd Stewart of Aiken, SC; son, Brandon (Sara) Stewart, Texas; a daughter, Leslie Smittle, Killeen, Texas; a step-daughter, Donna (Tim)Glover, Johnston, SC; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his beloved pet, Angie. Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Holmes; his father, Ray Stewart; and his brother, Mike Stewart. While in Larry and Mike's younger years, they had a band called "The Capris" and played in the local teen town and around the area. In lieu of flowers, all donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Aiken Chapter, 128 Stonemark Ln., Columbia, South Carolina 29210.
