Obituary of James L. Oswald

Graveside services for Mr. James L. Oswald will be held Friday, February 18, 2005 at 11 AM in Calvary Cemetery, Aiken, SC with The Reverend Jose Rodolfo Lache officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at Cumberland Village. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Mr. Oswald, 90, of Aiken, SC, died Wednesday, morning, February 16, 2005 at his home.
Jim was born in Allendale, SC, November 9, 1914, a son of the late James Lawton and Elizabeth Ann Bryan Oswald. He graduated from Allendale High School and from Duke University in 1935. He received his Master of Library Science from Emory University where he also served as Librarian until 1941. A World War II veteran, he proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps in the Aleutian Islands, at the Air Force Library in Alabama, and at the Pentagon. Hw was a twenty-seven year employee of E.I. Dupont, and was at the Savannah River Plant from 1952-1978. He was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.
In 2000 he received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the University of South Carolina for his and his late wife Mary?s involvement at the University of South Carolina at Aiken as early participants in the Academy for Lifelong Learning and in the Culture Series Events. Their love for language and literature and their careers as librarians led to their endowment of USCA James and Mary Oswald Distinguished Writers Series. It brings writers to the campus for readings and interaction with the community and students and provides for the publication of the OSWALD REVIEW. He was presented with an Honorary Alumnus Award in 1999 at USCA.
His survivors include many nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Mrs. John S. Oswald.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Walter Oswald and his brothers and sisters, Phebe O. Schenk, Herman Oswald, Bryan Oswald, Elizabeth O. Johns, Charlotte O. Muckenfuss, and John Oswald.
