Obituary of Raymond Browning Jewell
AIKEN, SC -- Raymond Browning Jewell entered into heaven Monday, June 25, 2018. He died peacefully at his home. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 28 from 6 – 8 pm at George Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at the George Funeral Home Chapel at 9 am on Friday, June 29 followed by the interment at Sunset Memory Gardens.
Ray was born and raised in Easley, SC on July 11, 1929, one of eight children born to Essie Browning and Samuel Oscar Jewell. He was an avid sports enthusiast from high school football to his life-long passion with golf. After serving in the US Army during the Korean War, he started work at the Savannah River Plan in 1952. He attended the University of Georgia (but was a loyal Gamecock fan all his life!) Ray spent the next 40 years working in various areas of the site with his last assignment as head of the Fire Department.
A devoted family man and devout member of Millbrook Baptist Church, he served his church and was involved in coaching sports. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lavon Stephens Jewell and his beloved son, William David Jewell.
He is survived by his loving wife, Liz Stewart Jewell, his daughters Elizabeth Widener (Billy) and Cynthia Pollett (George), his grandchildren James (Samantha), Jeremy (Rebeca), Sarah (Jeremy), David, Jr. (Meredith), Erin (Josh), Amanda and Taylor as well as his great-grandchildren Morgan, Finn, Brooks, Ava, Avery, Carden, Hollis, Lyle, and Ellie.
In lieu of flowers donations to the SC Alzheimer’s Association, Midlands Area Office, 140 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 210 Columbia, SC 29210 would be appreciated.
