Obituary of Catherine Picket-Burns

A funeral Mass for Catherine B. Pickett-Burns will be celebrated on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at 10am at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. A memorial service was held at St. Mary's church in Algoma, WI on Thurs. October 4, 2007 at 4:00PM with Father William Switchenberg officiating.
Mrs. Pickett-Burns, of Las Vegas, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, died peacefully September 27, 2007 at her sister Mary Fulwiler's house in Algoma, WI with her family at her side.
Cathy was born to John Pickett & Catherine Smith Pickett of Glasgow Scotland Aug 11th, 1958 in Ballston Spa, NY where her father was attending the nuclear power submarine school. She grew up in a Navy family and moved frequently. From 1968-1970 she lived in Dunoon, Scotland and attended St. Muns Catholic School with her siblings, while her father was stationed at the Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine Base in Holy Loch Scotland. Her twin sisters Kelly and Marie Sam and Mike were born there during that time. As. an adult, she returned to Dunoon several times with her mother and sisters to renew old friendships .She graduated from high school in Sturgeon Bay, WI in 1976. She then worked as a nurse's aide at the Dorchester for several years. Cathy loved to travel, and traveled with her sister's and her best friend Annie through-out Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean. In July of 1989 Cathy married Christopher Burns in Rome, Italy, then lived in Port Clinton, Ohio where she worked at the nuclear power plant. In 1991 she moved to Aiken, SC with her husband and daughter. She worked at AMAG-her brother's nuclear engineering business- as a nuclear engineer recruiter. During this time she traveled with her daughter to Indonesia & Bali where her husband worked constructing power plants. In 2005 her husband's job took them to Las Vegas, but Cathy's heart remained in Aiken, SC, which will be her final resting place. Cathy had a great zest for life. She loved people and people loved her. Everywhere she went, she made friends. She loved her family, especially her daughter Caitlin her friends, the Green Bay Packers, traveling, scuba diving in Key West, FL, skydiving, reading and keeping up on current affairs. One of the thrilling things in her life was meeting and being blessed by Pope John Paul 2nd Roman numerals in 1989. While there she also met and spoke with Cardinal Ratzinger, the current Pope Benedict. Cathy was a very kind, loving, caring and compassionate person; and will be remembered by her family and friends for these traits as well as for her love of life. She was a member of VFW Post 5877 Ladies Auxiliary in Aiken, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aiken, the NRA and the United States Submarine Veterans Ladies Auxiliary "Damsel's of the Deep."
She is survived by her husband Christopher & daughter Caitlin of Las Vegas. Other survivors include her parents, John & Catherine Pickett, Sturgeon Bay, WI, brother, JD Pickett Denise Platt of Aiken, SC, sisters, Mary Fulwiler Dan Algoma, WI, Dorothy Walker Ron Dallas, TX, Margaret Pickett, Green Bay, WI, Kelly Sam Pickett-Suhrer Suhrer Steven Sturgeon Bay, WI, & Marie Arellano Sergio, Memphis TN; her sisters-in-law Jody Larry Godwin, Vicki Fred Thomas and brother in-law Mike Cathy Burns, all of Bellefontaine, Ohio, numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces & nephews, cousins and Aunts and Uncles, all of whom she loved very much, and her best friend Anne Mancheski of Sturgeon Bay, WI.
She was proceeded in death by her twin brothers John A and William F who passed away shortly after birth.
A memorial fund will be set up in Cathy's name at the Make A Wish Foundation, St. Lukes Research center for children and the American Cancer Society. The family would like to thank Dan Fulwiler, Dr. Daniel Koster for his kindness and the care he gave Cathy; The nurses and CNA's at Bellin Hospital, all of the staff at Unity Hospice; especially Ida, words alone cannot express our thanks enough. Annie, we love you.thank you. Thanks also to Father William Switchenberg, Father Anthony Birdsal and our families and friends for their help.
