Cdr. George Philip Powers, US Navy, ret. 89, of Aiken, died Sunday, December 19, 2010 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers Born in Delaware, OH, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Zaidee L. Yates Powers. He moved to Aiken in 2009. George was a naval aviator and flew torpedo bombers on the USS Coral Sea during the Pacific campaign during WWII. After the WWII he flew in one of the first night fighter squadrons and later was the combat officer on the Admiral's staff on the Pacific Fleet during the early years in Vietnam. George was a gifted clock maker. He was a loving father and husband. He is survived by his wife Patsey Martin Powers, son, Greg Melanie Powers, Aiken; daughters, Lynne Juerg Weber, Bern, Switzerland; Jan Jack Jordan, Yorktown, VA; grandchildren, Elizabeth Mike Allen, Amanda Jordan, Gregg Allie Powers, Philip Powers and Meleah Powers. Funeral services for Mr. George Philip Powers will be private. GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER, AIKEN is assisting the family.
