Aiken SC — Mr. Robert J. Gainer, 87, entered into rest on Wednesday, December 10, 2014. Mr. Gainer was born in Capitol Heights, Md. eldest child of Giles and Florence Boswell Gainer. Robert (Bob) proudly served his country, entering the Marine Corps at 17 near the end of WWII. Making the Marine Corps Rifle Team, he set a USMC record that stood for a decade.
After WWII, Bob attended the University of Maryland, became a Manufacturer's Representative, and, later, vice president of a construction firm. In 1974, Bob founded R.J. Gainer & Son, Inc., a building/development company specializing in residential communities and custom homes in the Washington, D.C. area. He was owner/operator of the firm for 23 years.
An avid sportsman, Bob enjoyed playing golf (shooting his age or better for 16 straight years from age 68 to 83). When younger, he played many sports, was especially fond of baseball, and was a Boys Club coach. Bob spent many happy days hunting ducks and geese along the Chesapeake Bay and Maryland's Eastern Shore, usually in the company of one of his sons.
Bob lived in District Heights, Md. from 1951 to 1973. The family then moved to the Brookeville, Md. countryside, raising cattle and horses until he retired in 1997. From 1997-2007, he resided in Governor's Land, Williamsburg, Va., where he was a member of Two Rivers Country Club. In 2008, Bob made Aiken's Woodside Plantation Country Club his home.
Bob was a former Sunday School teacher and an Elder and Deacon in the Presbyterian and Methodist churches.
A man of enormous warmth and generosity, he enthusiastically shared his love of golf, old movies and gardening with his family, and loved dining and visiting with the Woodside Plantation CC staff. Married for over 66 years, Bob kept his romance with Marti alive. The love they shared never faded. He was one of a kind, and will be terribly missed.
