What a great guy. I remember LT. Canepa when I was just a young cadet. He taught ne a lot and I appreciated his humor. I am sorry that I am out of town and will not be at the funeral. Thanks for all you did for this community and for me.

Mr. Jim was an awesome person. He will be missed by so many. I remember when my son was about 3 years old we were invited to a big dinner at the lake. Because my son had so many health problems Mr. Jim told Jimmy that no one but Jimmy could take him out on the jet ski and that he better be super careful. My son had a ball and was so worn out by days end that he fell asleep. Mr. Jim treated everyone there just like family. We will sure miss him.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family. You will all be in our prayers.

With deepest sympathy to the Canepa family! I will always remember Jim as my first Lieutenant when I joined Public Safety in the early 80's. My first night on the streets as an officer, he took me out and provided me with a lot of wisdom, guidance and instruction that helped me to develop into a good Public Safety Officer/Fireman. He respected me and supported every decision I made on the streets. As others have stated, he will surely be missed. "Rest in Peace Jim"

I met Jim Canepa while working at the Majik Markets on York Street and Richland Ave, back in the late 70's and early 80's. He always made me feel safe and cared for. It was like having my big brother watching out for me. He remained my friend from then on. Jim Canepa was the type of person that once you were his friend, you remained his friend, forever. I moved out of the area, but thanks to Facebook, we remained in contact.
My Condolences and God's Blessings for his wife, children and grandchildren. May his memory provide you comfort until you join him again in Heaven. I can still hear his voice, he will be missed so very much.
God Bless You Jim. Rest In Peace My Friend.

He was such a kind hearted man that had a compassion for others, I can remember working Aiken Regional Medical Center in the Emergency Room, he would come by and check on us at night.

Thank you so much for your kind words. He was a very special man. Many people don't know the things he did for young people. I remember my husband telling stories about waking up in the morning and finding a youth sleeping on their couch from the night before. Instead of arresting them or calling their parents he would bring them home, let them sleep it off, and feed them. He was so good to me. I always felt like I was one of his children. He will be missed so much!

Jim, you leave us much too soon. As a teenager in the streets of Aiken you gave me many breaks. As well as many warnings that you would hang from a traffic light if I didn't get off your side of town. Always appreciated and never forgotten. Your actions as a young Aiken Police Officer combined with those of your fellow officers keep me straight enough that a few years later I would put on the uniform of a police officer. I remember well the first time you and Ike Lewis saw me in that uniform: the two of you laughed so hard you couldn't even get back into the patrol car. What we refer to as the Good Ol Days. We had our differences at times, none intentional. We never let those difference bleed over to our day to day responsibilities and I could accomplish that by simply following your lead and doing as you did. To this day, I feel that I am indebted to you and your fellow officers. You set many standards, you served the people of Aiken for decades and retired with an unblemished record. Reached your goal of retirement on the lake. Having faced many challenges and changes in your professional and personal life, defeated or overcame each with dignity and carried on. Unquestionably a True Man and True Officer. Having a Wife, Children, and Mother, (who was an officer herself) supporting you in every way. You were rich in so many ways. Having known and worked with you and your mother was a pleasure and honor on every day. You will be missed and remembered by many, Rest in peace Lt. Canepa. You earned it. Enjoy your reunion with those Family Members and Fellow Officers who went before you.
