Obituary of Douglas Rene Becker

Mr. Douglas Rene Becker, 82, husband of Florence Lowe Becker, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Carriage Hills Nursing Center. A memorial service will be held Monday at 4:30 p.m. at George Funeral Home, Historic Downtown Chapel with the Rev. John E. Wertz officiating. Burial of his remains will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. Becker moved to Aiken in 1953 from Delaware. He was a mechanical engineer with DuPont, retiring in 1983. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y. to the late Fred and Caroline Becker. Mr. Becker was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. During World War II he served his country in the Army Air Corps as the lead navigator aboard a B-17 with the 490th Bomb Group. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was active in Boy Scouts throughout his life, earning the Outstanding Scout of the Year award in 1941. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Douglas C. Becker of Greenwood and Jeffrey A. Becker and wife Diane of Charleston; a daughter, Renee Becker Beaty of Aiken; and six grandchildren. The family wishes that memorial be made to the Boy Scouts, the Alzheimer's Association or the American Diabetes Association.
