Jan Engstrand Redfearn passed away on April 3,2016, at her home in Aiken with her devoted husband, Jim, by her side. She was 74 years old. Jan was born on November 7, 1941, in Wichita Falls, Texas. She was the younger of two daughters born to Clinton and Bobbie Engstrand. Jan grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and graduated high school from The Barstow School in Kansas City. She attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a degree in education. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority while at KU. Jan met her husband, James "Jim" Redfearn, while they both were in college. Jan and Jim were married in 1963 and celebrated over 52 years as husband and wife. Jan taught school for several years after she was married, and she and Jim eventually settled in Fort Worth, Texas. She was a strict teacher who expected nothing but the best from her students and herself in the classroom. Her joy in teaching was evident and reflected by the love her students had for her. Jan's greatest delight was her family. She adored her husband and loved to brag about him and the way he cared for her. She was a devoted mother and Mimi, as she was known to her six grandchildren. Jan was a woman of many talents- quilting, knitting, entertaining were some of her best skills. She also loved to shop and had a keen eye for a bargain! Jan was an equally devoted friend and no matter where she lived, she made deep and lasting relationships which she cherished. Perhaps Jan's favorite activity was travelling, especially cruising with her husband. Together they spent more than 250 days at sea. She was never happier than when she was on the deck of a cruise ship with a glass of wine in her hand and Jim at her side. Jan and Jim renewed their vows on a cruise in 2012 with their entire family in attendance. Jan and Jim moved to Aiken in 2006, after many years living in South Florida. Jan was a member of the PEO Sisterhood. She was an Episcopalian for most of her life and a member of St. Thaddeus Church. She served on the Care Team and the Altar Guild for the church. She and Jim delivered altar flowers to sick and homebound church members. She volunteered in the church's soup kitchen and with Habitat for Humanity for many years and was a firm believer in giving of her time and talents to anyone who needed her. Above all else, Jan was a fighter. Over the last five years, she valiantly battled lung cancer four times, fought the effects of pulmonary fibrosis and most recently pulmonary hypertension. Despite her medical symptoms, her optimism rarely waned. Her fierce determination and indomitable spirit in all things were an example to all who knew her. Hers was a life well lived. The family would like to thank her care team at Duke University Medical Center as well as Dr. Toole and Dr. Sannito of Aiken for their excellent and compassionate care. Jan was preceded in death by her mother, Bobbie Lee, and her father, Clinton Olaus. Jan is survived by her husband, Jim; daughter, Tracy Matheson, and her husband, David, of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Becky Halterman, and her husband, Phillip, of Stokesdale, North Carolina; sister, Mary Lee Cooksey, of Dallas, Texas; and her six grandchildren, Nick, Molly, Ben, Clint, Max, and Claire. Jan also leaves behind her furry and constant companion, Sandy Sue. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with Father Grant Wiseman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Stevenson - McClelland building.
