Carl Langley was a true newspaperman, and a vanquisher of thugs, miscreants and evil-doers! If he didn't get them with the power of his pen, the bad guys were always subject to a good whack with his trusty cane or worse. For Carl, the world was mostly a black and white place, just like ink on newsprint. He provided the "color." He was frank, often with a "look here," but when he praised you, you always knew he was sincere. I remember how much it meant to hear him say "you're doing good work over there" after I left the Standard to work at the Chronicle. I tip my cap to you, Carl. My condolences to Betty, surviving family members and the Aiken community. - EW

Carl,
How blessed were we to know such a wonderful, caring, and brilliant man. You epitomized to us the true definition of a newspaper reporter! Always searching for truth and justice, and helping our community. I was blessed to have the nickname, Biscuits. It was an honor. I know John cherishes the time he spent working with you! Ms. Betty, you are in our thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. Please call on your Aiken Standard family. We are here! Our deepest condolences to the entire family.

Carl Langley was a True and Dear Friend and I am sad at his passing. I keep thinking of a sentiment I heard long ago and I would like to relate it to Carl: "If tears could build a highway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven and bring Carl home again"....to me and to Betty.

Carl was such a honorable man. I have so many fond memories of him at the Aiken Standard. I look forward to his monthly visits after he retired. He always had a way of making you feel special. Ms. Betty you were the love of his life. I was truly saddened when I heard on Saturday that his battle was over. He and my dad took chemo together and had great chats. I have said a prayer asking God to give you and his love ones the strength, understanding, and comfort during this most diffcult time. I will always treasure the friendship that we shared. If you need anything please remember to call on your Aiken Standard family. We loved Carl.

From his days as mayor of New Ellenton to his days as a journalist, Carl was truly a legend. He knew how to get a story and he knew how to write a story. And if reporters didn't learn something from him, then they weren't paying attention. He's probably now editor-in-chief of "The Heavenly News!" I will miss him greatly, and my heart goes out to his family.

Carl's column was the first we would read when he wrote for the Aiken Standard. His humor and empathy for the "everyman" was remarkable and he brought everything he wrote to life. We always went to his humorous talks about his life as a child which left us all gasping with laughter. He encouraged me with kind words when I was a "stringer" for the Aiken Standard which from him was high praise indeed. Even after moving from Aiken we kept touch via email and phone calls. Aiken and the publishing world has lost a true legend.

Our sincere condolences to Betty and the entire family. Carl's passing leaves us all with a hole in our hearts for his missing presence but with a vault full of memories of one of Aiken's legends. Carl and I met when I became Aiken County Administrator, and he was a mentor and vocal conscience to me during the next nine years. Few men have had the lasting impact that Carl has had on me and my life. His believe in principles and ability to live those principles enabled him to stand above those he lived and worked with. May we strive to live his dreams as we continue with our lives. May God bless Carl, Betty and the family in the days ahead.

My heart is heavy with sorrow at the loss of Carl. He had the heart of an angel under that gruff exterior and was always working for the underdog. I had spoken to him recently and he was fighting this thing right up to the end. He called me "Swifty" for my swift calculating skills which he relied upon in some of his news stories. Carl, enjoy your well-deserved rest surrounded by some of your beloved pets who went before you. We in Aiken will miss you dearly.

I received the news this morning Sundayof Carl's passing. Carl was a great friend a mentor to me and to Edgefield Daily. He was a talented writer, had a wonderful quick wit, and loved life. He joined Edgefield Daily in December of 2006 and remained a cherished contributor until his battle with cancer in May of 2010 became too much for him to continue.
Our hearts are heavy and our prayers go out to his family.
You will be sorely missed my friend.

To the entire Langley family. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Mr. Carl. I truly loved that man -- some of my fondest memories of Mr. Carl go back to New Ellenton when he was mayor and hired me as Assistant City Clerk when I was in my early 20s. Even though I was not in the job long, Mr. Carl kept us entertained all the time. I also remember the times he came to our house and would stay for hours talking to mom and dad when my mom worked sewing for some of the people in NE. The entire Miller family loved and respected him. To Wanda, Hoppy, Jeff and the rest of the family I am so sorry, and please let me know if you need anything. Love, Debbie

Mr. Langley was responsible for us being able to care for a rescue dog, Billy, who showed up at our work, the Aiken Standard, in l997. We were so grateful to him for Billy. We all worked together, day in and out, for years and he was always the same. He never changed and we loved him. We talked with him several weeks ago when his little love, Lucy, passed. Now he is with
those that we so important to him. Our love to Miss Betty. Diane Owens and Jeff Harding.

My former co-worker, friend and mentor has left us and joined his Daddy, his mother, his brother and his dear pups. He leaves behind his beloved Betty and faithful furry companions. He was blessed to have one last hand squeeze from Betty and hear the final words of Preacher William Eaves who helped him leave this world onto his next journey. He was not afraid of dying and selflessly shared his fear and concerns of Betty's well-being and care. During the last few days he found comfort from Preacher Eaves visits and words and so enjoyed just sitting with his Betts sweetly holding her hands and sharing memories. Aiken has lost a beloved resident and talented writer.

Our Coffee Club has no elected leaders but we called Carl Our Glorious Leader. He said it was hard to keep us all straight, that some times he wondered if he was up to the task.
We loved Carl for his humor, his terrific recall of stories and names from the past, and his interest in all people. We have lost several active members of our club of late, but it just doesn't get any easier.
When the lottery grew to over $50 million, we would throw some money in a pot and Carl would go to several different locations for us. He always said if he showed up missing, we would know one of those tickets had won. It kinda makes us wonder,"okay Carl, where are you?"
