I was greatly saddened upon learning of the death of Steve. My brother Lawrie and I were both at A.P.S.together in the Fifties. Our Mother was a close and old friend their Mother from before the War,the common denominator however for both generations was horses and hunting.
I shall always remember what a wonderful rider Steve was and I am not surprised that he dedicated so much of his life to horses and racing.
To his wife and family, and to his brother Geoffrey, Lawrie and I wish to send our deepest sympathy.

Steve could make me laugh when almost no one else could. He often presented a gruff exterior but somehow clearly showed that he cared about others tremendously. His admiration for his wife and family and theirs for him was always so evident. He will always remain one of my heroes. My thoughts and prayers are with you, his family, who were so fortuate to have been the objects of his love.

To The Groat family,
I'm very sorry to have read in the obituaries that your family has experienced the pain of losing a loved one in death. During this time of mourning, I would like to express my sincere condolence at the loss of your loved one and I pray everything is going as well as can be expected. With sincere sympathy to the family may these understanding thoughts help somehow to convey the sympathy that hearts can feel but words can never say. May God comfort you at this time of sorrow and bless your family and may you find comfort in persistent prayers, as “the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your heart and your mental powers.” Phil. 4:7

Jeannie,
Susan and I want to express our heartfelt condolences to you and your family. During the short time that I spent with Steve,I was fortunate to see his spirit, courage and bravery on display. I am sure that his love for you, his family and friends had a lot to do with that. It is hard to imagine the "treatments" he underwent in his battles with cancer. His attitude and demeanor hid his constant pain. He was in every sense of the word heroic. I hope that you and your family can take comfort in the fact that to know Steve and be counted amoungst his friends and admirers was truly an honor.

Although I had seen Steve and Jeanie in Ireland just two months ago,it came as a devistating shock to hear he had drawn his last breath as for ten years he had seemed indestructable in the face of his illness. Having flown back to the States across the Atlantic he shrugged off jet lag to travel eight hours to attend a senior stewards meeting of the National Steeplechase Association, the man was made of steel. He was such a good friend to us and if a man can love another man, then I did. Happily his genes have passed to his daughters and the world is a better place for having Steve Groat among us. Jeanie, albeit barely five feet tall was very much a 50% part of this family and has shone through as a 110 pound ball of gold. We cannot attend Steve's memorial service but with another of his English friends ,Edward Gillespie,we will be walking in the hills above Cheltenham Racecourse on the 5th to pay our respects to an unforgetable man.

Jeannie and Molly, I am so sad to hear about Steve's passing. I will always remember him and you all from Amy's time at Chatham Hall. Steve was so good to her as well as your entire family. We all have many happy memories of spending time with you. I'm sorry too that we did not have the pleasure of hosting you here on the Shields River for fishing. Had I known he was such an avid fly fisherman I would have kept hounding you to come out to our place. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Ann Schilling

It's hard to put into words how Steve inspired people, whether you knew him as family, mentor, or friend. Together with Jeannie, he created a wonderful life and a beautiful family and extended family of friends. To know Steve was to have a wonderful person full of wisdom, caring, giving and true friendship by your side. The Groat family and the community of Aiken lost a true champion today. We love you, Steve, and will miss you.
