Joseph Mariner Thompson, 100, husband of the late Madeliene Riley Thompson, of Aiken, SC died at Trinity Lutheran Home in Aiken, SC on November 21, 2008. Memorial services will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church in Aiken, SC on December 1, 2008 at 4:00 PM.
Mr. Thompson was born September 1, 1908, at Mt. Vernon, NH and raised in Fryeburg, ME. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph Mariner Thompson, MD and Reba May Eastman Thompson Craig, his stepfather Willie Parker Craig, MD, his half brother William Parker Craig and his half sister Dorothy Lord Craig.
He received a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maine in 1929, was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and played on the University baseball team. He was employed as an Assistance Area Superintendent at E.I. duPont de Nemours and Company, for whom he worked 44 years before his retirement in 1973. He was a long time member of St. John's United Methodist Church, a volunteer worker for 20 years at Aiken Regional Medical Center, a volunteer at ACTS in Aiken, past chairman of the Red Cross Blood drives at DuPont, had been active with little league sports, a commander of the United States Power Squadron at Augusta, GA, and had been a avid boater.
Surviving are his children Edwin Lord Thompson of Gatlinburg, TN, Joseph Mariner Thompson, Jr. of Livingston, TX, Richard Standish Thompson of Greensboro, NC, Susan Thompson Turnbull of Columbia, SC, William Alden Thompson of Sarasota, FL, 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and many friends.
