Obituary of Daniel James Mahoney

A Memorial Mass for Mr. Daniel James Mahoney will be celebrated at 12:00 on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Aiken. The family will receive friends, immediately after the service in Smith Hall adjacent the church. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church or School, PO Box 438 Aiken, SC 29802. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center is assisting the family.
Mr. Mahoney, 79, of Aiken, died Tuesday at his residence. A son of the late James and Margaret Kinnane Mahoney, he was born in Buffalo, NY where he lived before moving to Aiken in 1954.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy and then worked for the E. I. DuPont Company, where he worked for 39 years mainly in the Separations Department, retiring in 1989 as a Project Engineer at the Savannah River Site. Dan was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and was a Past Grand Knight for Knights of Columbus, Msgr. George L. Smith Council #3684. An avid sportsman, Dan played semi-professional baseball in Buffalo. He was also well known for the eighteen years he spent as a Little League Baseball coach and umpire in Aiken. He also volunteered at Hitchcock Healthcare and had been a member of the Aiken Golf Club for fifty years. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, he had the gift of a great sense of humor. His greatest joy was his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mahoney was pre-deceased by a daughter, Kathleen Mahoney, who died in 1966, two brothers; Vincent & James and a sister; Jeanne Bauer. He is survived by his wife Jeanette Wood Mahoney, Aiken, a daughter; Patricia David Griffith, Aiken, three sons; Mark Betsy Mahoney, Aiken, Daniel Gina Mahoney, Lexington, SC and Michael Dawn Mahoney, Aiken, two sisters; Margaret Challstrom, Springfield, VA and Marie Karnath, Collins, NY and a brother; Mark Mahoney, W. Seneca, NY. Mr. Mahoney is also survived by nine grandchildren.
