I just found out about this two days ago it's hard to process. My favorite memory is of david coming to school stoned out of his mind from dental work. St. Angela could be boring but david made it fun. Did he ever learn to tie a tie?

I had the pleasure of knowing and being very close to David throughout our whole lives-from elementary school on...we became VERY good friends during high school and college years and even closer after he got paralyzed. I am so very grateful to have spent sooo much quality time w/ David during those years which could be lonely sometimes...he had a great attitude and I always told him he should be a public speaker. He always said "I had a GREAT first 42 years and now that Im paralyzed, its different but its still great and Im surrounded by beautiful women all the time-just for different reasons. We went lots of places together-me, him and Emerald when she was still his caretaker and had lots of fun. i stayed overnight a few times and his mom would get on to us for missbehaving just like she did in high school. She'd roll her eyes and scold us but we'd giggle and carry on. We laid out in the sun, went car shopping for me (he saying his disability would bring sympathy in getting a better deal) we watched movies, read, ate great meals Mrs. Gilmer made and often crab legs which David loved...he even nicked some once which nearly gave me heart failure! He would screen all my potential bpyfriends who I'd bring around to see what he thought. We often said we knew we would just end up together and that would be just fine-we already knew we got along just fine.He always liked hearing "the scoop" on those he didn't see and I'd try to get those who couldn't find time to come around to make it happen but David didn't let it get him down-he was just glad if they did ever show.He loved and cared about everybody and never held a grudge and when my llife took on a different journey he said he was proud of me and was really supportive...he was so tolerant and we had fun doing things like flossing teeth,me doing his toenails (which he even let me paint once!) popping bumps which grossed out others and even cutting his hair. he appreciated everything and i never ever left without a kiss and us telling each other we loved one another. He taight me so much about how to really appreciate life and shared way for with me than i could ever repay. I know he is watching and is proud and he was my biggest supporter for so long.I look forward to seeing him again.love you man, Sharon Baxter

My thoughts and prayers go out to David's parents and family. He was a good guy and I've been fortunate to have known him and gone to school here in Aiken with him. He was funny, kind and a great friend. I know I have him looking over me.
My deepest sympathies, Kim Fuller Chavis

My deepest sympathy to David' family. I met David through my dear friend, Jim Harmon. The two of them could keep you laughing for hours. I know Jim was in Heaven with open arms, greeting his bud! God's Blessings... RIP David!

I am so sorry to hear that David passed away. I know that this will be a difficult time for both of you, Mr and Mrs Gilmer, but be at peace knowing that you took wonderful care of your son for many years. I cannot think of David without smiling, because he was such a "hoot"! I am sure that he kept you young and aged you at the same time throughout his life! My hope is that you will walk in the world, as he would have, continuing to live life to the fullest that you can! God bless!
Bob's sister,
Marian Matsko

Whenever I think of my cousin David, it always makes me smile! From the moment he was born he was a character! He was always a handsome, adventurous, daredevil, with a sweet soul who made us laugh when we were all together (and no doubt produced some gray hairs for his parents!). Whenever our two families got together when we were kids, I (a yankee) would always start talking with a southern drawl after spending time with him and Elaine for several days (lol).
Just recently on Memorial Day weekend, when my brother and sister and I were all together, we were laughing about some great David stories from family weddings over the years.
Our grandmother, Mimmie (a character herself!) adored David and I recall them having a very special bond. My Mom, his Aunt Ruth also had a special place in her heart for David and if she were still with us she would have some amazing stories to add as well!
His enthusiastic, positive approach to life and everything that came his way is an example to us all. David was the definition of YOLO (you only live once). I believe he did more things to push the edge of life's envelope in his too short life than mosts folks will ever do!
David will be remembered fondly and with a smile. Below are some pix of favorite moments. (More pix to come)
All my love to you, Uncle George, Aunt Anna and Elaine. I share your heartbreak for this loss,
~Michelle, Shane and Tanna Solberg

Davie was so much more than a client to me, he was my family but most of all he was my best friend. I loved everything about Davie, he always knew how to make me smile. There were many days that I would go to him or call and tell him about all my problems and fears and he would listen and then say " well no matter what you know I love you babe". He was such an inspiration to me and everyone he came in contact with, I am a better person because I had him in my life. I know that he will continue to inspire me and everyone who knew him. The last few days have been hard knowing that I will never see him again, hear his voice again, or see his smile.. My heart feels broken but I know that he is in a better place now, and that one day I will meet him in heaven. He will always stay in my heart and in my memories. I will never forget him.

As David's cousin, I have vivid memories of an active little boy who loved playing outdoors. I always thought of him as a daredevil with this mischievous grin. I have really great memories of our family's visits to South Carolina at the house and at the lake where we all learned to water ski. From that little boy I knew and loved, he seemed to grow into a warm and loving man who still had that zest for life. My life was blessed by knowing him and he will truly be missed. To Uncle George, Aunt Anna, Elaine, Bob, Kyle, Derek and Lindsey please know you are in my family's prayers.
All our love,
Brenda, Ron, Maxx and Veronica McGathey

I was very saddened to hear the news about David, but as I reflected back on the memories, a smile came to my face....the time we got caught fishing in a private pond and went running through the woods with stringers of bass hanging from our belts; the time we went catfishing on the Savannah River and all we caught were eels; numerous times swimming the floating dock at Gem Lakes back out to the middle after it had broken free and wondering if we were ever going to make it; the time he wrestled with the ceiling fan in our family room when my parents were out of town; numerous Gamecock tailgates and celebrations at Group Therapy afterwards....and finally the last time I saw him at The Bowery when we had a mini St. Angela reunion, with Shawn, Lee, Leroy, Patrick, Jane, June, Mike, Allen, Tommy, and others....
I will miss him.

Wow, where do I start, so many funny and fun memories. Riding dirt bikes until the gas tank ran dry on the powerline trails, jumping of the quarry cliffs in Edgefield (Max the dog getting impounded by the police as collateral), taking him Mom's Chevette off- roading (shh!) taking his Mom's Oldsmobile off-roading (Shhhh!)., helping him get his S-10 blazer unstuck off a sand dune, playing spades at Shaffer's Mom's house, cruising Aiken in his Camaro, countless hours in a boat skiing, tubing or fishing at Lake Murray, wrestling with a goat in the back of a pickup truck which we bought at the lake with the intention of making BBQ, but couldn't bring ourselves to kill the mangy creature . I could go on and on. I will miss him greatly. I know he put a smile on many a face and my hope is he has a huge smile on his face now in Heaven with Jesus our Lord. My prayers of comfort and peace are with Mr. and Mrs. Gilmer and Anna.
