Obituary of Robert D. Hamman

Mr. Robert D. Hamman of Aiken died Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, peacefully at his home at the age of 81 years. Born in Harrisburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Alvin S. Hamman and the late Irene Churchman Hamman. He graduated from the William Penn High School, Harrisburg, Pa., attended Penn State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and then earned his master's in physics from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Joyce H. Oviatt on Aug. 12, 1960, and after living in many places, they have made their home in Aiken for the last six years. Before retiring, Robert was a chemist with the U.S. Department of Defense in Pensacola, Fla., and was a member of the American Chemical Society.
In addition to his parents, Robert was predeceased by a sister, Louise I. Hamman.
Robert is survived by his wife, Joyce O. Hamman of Aiken; two daughters, Lisa Jeanne Galland of Bellevue, Wash., and Susan H. David Hamilton of Aiken; a son, Jeffrey D. Joyce B. Hamman of Johns Creek, Ga.; and eight grandchildren, Scott Galland, Brett Galland, Brandon Galland, Gretchen Hamman, Erik Hamman, William Hamilton, Andrew Hamilton and Charles Hamilton.
A private memorial is being planned by family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to the South Aiken Presbyterian Church Kindergarten, 1711 Whiskey Road, Aiken, SC 29803 or to Regency Hospice, 105 Summerwood Way, Aiken, SC 29803. George Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. S.W., Aiken is assisting the family.
