Aiken----Mrs. Helen S. Penland, 81, wife of the late Aud Penland, died Saturday at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Funeral services will be held today 11AM, June 17 2003 at George Funeral Homes, Historic Downtown Chapel with Rev. Kevin Thumpston officiating. Pallbearers will be Chuck Graham, Alan Foreman, Sammy Easter, Geoff Penland, Franklin Legare and Keith Fraley. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens, Graniteville, SC. Mrs. Penland was born in Hayesville, NC to the late Richard James Smith, Sr. and Christine Davis Smith. She moved to Aiken in 1952 from Oakridge, TN. Helen was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. Survivors include her son, Richard Penland, Aiken, daughters; Patricia Anne Rogers and Audrey Graham, both of Aiken, half sister, Martha Perry Entrekin, Charlotte, NC, half brother Richard James Smith, Jr., Charlotte, NC, seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. The family wishes that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
