A Funeral Mass for Edward William Harris will be celebrated at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Aiken by Fr. Jim LeBlanc on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 12 noon. Interment will take place at Long Island National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken on Wednesday, beginning with a wake service at 6pm and visitation continuing until 8pm. Memorial donations may be directed to the Savannah River Cancer Foundation PO Box 3694, Aiken, SC 29802. Mr. Harris, 73, of Aiken, died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at University Hospital, Augusta, GA. The only child of the late Edward C. Harris and Mildred Kiesel Harris, he was born in New York City and had lived in Belle Terre, NY before moving to Aiken eleven years ago. He attended Hofstra University, where he was a member of the Crown and Lance Fraternity. He then earned his Master's Degree at Bridgeport University. Mr. Harris served as a Fire Control Officer on the USS Forestall 1957-1959. He worked for a short time at Sperry Gyroscope on Long Island and then decided to become a teacher. He taught in the Brentwood Public School System from 1962 until his retirement in 1991. He was active in youth athletics, serving as a couch and board member of the Hauppauge Youth Organization. Ed was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Aiken and was a member and avid golfer at Woodside Plantation Country Club. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Edward, who died in 1967. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ehser Harris, Aiken; a daughter, Elizabeth John Quinn Harris, Wrentham, MA and two sons, Daniel Jennifer Harris, Smithtown, NY and Kenneth Dana Harris, Annapolis, MD. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Daniel Harris, Jillian Harris, Megan Harris, Samantha Harris and Anna Li Quinn.
