A memorial service for Mr. Frank W. Ryan will be held Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 2:30pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Avenue, SW, Aiken. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of your choice.
Mr. Ryan, 88, of Aiken, died April 26, 2007, at his residence.
Mr. Ryan was born in Elizabeth, NJ to the late Grover and Elizabeth Harrington Ryan. He taught history and government at Hunter College, New York University and at the University of Maryland. Mr. Ryan then served with the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency to help rebuild Korea after the Korean War. He then became the field director for "Foster Parents Plan", now called "Plan International", a nonprofit agency where he dedicated his life to helping thousands of underprivileged children and their families in Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Indonesia for almost 25 years. He retired in Desert Hot Springs, CA before moving to Aiken in 2000.
Mr. Ryan was a World War II Army veteran who served in combat in the South Pacific. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Florida Southern College and was the class Valedictorian. He then received his Masters degree in International Relations from Stanford University. He is a published author. Mr. Ryan served his nation in wartime, and then he served humanity.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his lovely and devoted wife, Mary Alef. He is survived by his son, Brigadier General Michael A. Ryan and his wife Liane who are stationed in Germany, sister Elizabeth Anderson of Aiken, grandson Sean R.F. Ryan, sisters-in-law, Lucy Gardner and Patricia Swett, nephews David Koepper and Chuck Swett, and niece, Anne Senk.
