Was deeply saddened to learn of Bill\'s passing. I last saw him at a 56th FG reunion in Charleston in 1995. I was asst.crew chief on his P47 at Halesworth, England in 1943.I have always admired him especially his coolness when facing the dangers before him.I will miss that "Poor Boy from Kentucky".

Thank-you Col. Gordon for your straight-forward advice on the Sherman Board of Trustees. It was truly a pleasure and an education to hear your comments on the many issues we discussed. I will always remember how much you gave even in the late years of your life to the Sherman Board. It was truly an honor to be working with you.

You are in my prayers and thoughts now. Please let me share a poem of comfort with you. It gives me peace to know that we live as long as someone remembers us and each of you daughters will always remember Bill as a fine father and a wonderful friend. I send my love as well.
The poem is entitled THERE IS NO DEATH, author unknown:
There is a plan far greater than the plan you know;
There is a landscape broader than the one you see.
There is a haven where storm-tossed souls may go--
You call it death--we, immortality.
You call it death--this seeming endless sleep;
We call it birth--the soul at last set free.
\'Tis hampered not by time or space--you weep.
Why weep at death? \'Tis immortality.
Farewell, dear voyageur--\'twill not be long.
Your work is done--now may peace rest with thee.
Your kindly thoughts and deeds--they will live on.
This is not death--\'tis immortality.
Farewell, dear voyageur--the river winds and turns;
The cadence of your song wafts near to me,
And now you know the thing that all men learn:
There is no death--there\'s immortality.
Love, Linda and Joel

Col. Gordon exemplified the best America has to offer, a level-headed, no nonsense problem solver who was willing to step up to the plate and lead. I will miss him.

I knew Colonel Gordon as the loving father of
four beautiful daughters, one of whom I continue
to count as my dear friend. Sally, I don\'t believe
we were ever able to fool your Daddy.
I am certain he just chose to ignore our major
mischievous doings.
When Bill met him he remarked "what an officer
and a gentleman."
With deepest sympathy,

For the past year I had been looking forward to the day I could shake the Colonel\'s hand, ever since I first heard of his keen leadership, wit, and warm heart. I knew him only through his exemplary reputation, but his command presence came through even on the phone, and I know his memory will continue to influence all who knew him well.
