Obituary of Florence Becker

Please share a memory of Florence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

On Tuesday, January 18, Florence Becker, loving wife and mother of three children, passed away peacefully at Trinity on Laurens, less than 6 months before her 99th birthday. She lived a long, full life and was loved by all who had the pleasure of being in her company. Florence was always quick to laugh and make friendly conversation, including in the grocery store line. In fact, she baked birthday cakes for the Walmart greeters.

Florence was born on July 11, 1923, in Delaware. She worked as a secretary at DuPont in New York, where she met her husband, Douglas Becker. They wed in 1950 and they were happily married until his death in 2003. They moved to Aiken, SC, in 1953, when Doug began working at the Savannah River Plant. They raised their 3 children on Gilbert Street, where Florence resided until 2019, when she moved to assisted living at Trinity.

Mrs. Becker was an avid reader and instilled a love of books in her children and grandchildren. Her other passion in life was dancing, and she reminisced until her final days about dancing at the USO.  She was the quintessential “Nana” who baked cookies to mail to her grandchildren in college. She always baked extra to share with neighbors and the library staff whom she knew by name. Florence was kind to everyone she met and appreciated the simple things in life. She had a delightful sense of humor up until the end of her life.  She enjoyed trying new restaurants and eating out with Renee’s friends.

Florence was the last surviving sibling of five sisters. She will be greeted in heaven by her husband of 53 years, Douglas Becker and their son, Doug.  She hopes to be surrounded by her dogs there.  She is survived by two children, Renee Beaty(Jim Norris) and Jeff Becker (Diane); seven grandchildren, Andrew Beaty (John Kuhn), Sarah Beaty Lipton (Josh),  Ashley Becker(Jennifer), Jason Becker (Candace), and Zachary Becker (Matthew Jordan), Jamie Nix, and Jessica Nix as well as five great grandchildren.

Family will receive friends on Friday, February 4th, at 1:30 p.m.  The memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. at George’s Funeral Chapel.  Pastor Jeff Erbskorn, Saint Paul Lutheran Church, will officiate and Deacon Kathleen Cartledge, Saint Paul Lutheran Church as musician.   Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED, COVERING BOTH THE NOSE AND THE MOUTH.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to either the SPCA or Friends of the Library, PO Box 7041. Aiken 29804.

Special thanks to Kathy Reiter who visited her on Sundays and made her laugh and the volunteers from Regency Hospice who spent time with her during meals as well as Pastor Mark who reminisced with her about Rehoboth Beach.
