Obituary of Joyce Catharine Braun

AIKEN, SC – Joyce Catharine Braun, age 91, died Sunday, January 2, 2022.

Joyce was born June 8, 1930, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Elmer George Ertell and Cornelia Brost Ertell. She attended Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Buffalo before becoming a resident of Aiken, S.C., in 1953. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and worked as a chemist at the Savannah River Site.

An accomplished seamstress and embroiderer, she earned Master Craftsman designations in counted thread and in crewel embroidery from the Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA). She was also a longtime member and national officer of EGA. Joyce also enjoyed crocheting and other lace-making. She traveled around the world to see the works of other craftspeople. In her later years, she enjoyed the friendships she made in her Silver Sneakers class at the Weeks Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Glenn Ertell.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Charles Braun; a daughter, Kathryn Fenner (Stephen); a son, John Braun (Kay); two grandchildren, Michael Braun (Jessica), and Thomas Braun (Amanda); and three great-grandchildren, Jace, Grayson, and Chloe.
