Obituary of Dr. Martin Jay Pechersky

Aiken, SC: Dr. Martin Pechersky, 78, of Aiken, died Monday August 23, 2021 at his home surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Mildred and Louis Pechersky. Before moving to Aiken in 1990, he lived in Pittsburgh and State College, PA. A brilliant and original thinker regarding a wide range of topics, Martin was a pioneer in the early field of laser technology and optics, outstanding in his field and obtaining many awards and patents. He spent his childhood years in Pittsburgh working in and living above his family-owned grocery store, then going on to earn a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and becoming a Professor of Engineering Sciences and Mechanics at Penn State University, prior to moving to Aiken to work with SRS.
First and foremost, he was a loving husband and caretaker to his late wife, Carole, and their daughters and grandchildren. Humble, honorable, empathetic and loving, he was and is a role model to his family. Martin loved to travel, often with friends and family, visiting all 50 states and many countries. He had a great sense of humor and thoroughly enjoyed spending time and enjoying life with family and friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carole Pechersky (nee Frank), his parents, and his brother Philip (Helen) Pechersky.
He is survived by his daughters Julie (Alon) Plitt, Briarcliff Manor, NY; Kara (Richard) Deaner, Augusta, GA; Dana (Geoffrey) Lumetta, Brooklyn, NY; brother Paul (Diane) Pechersky, Dallas, TX, and brother David (Nancy) Pechersky, Fountain Hills, AZ; and his grandchildren, Samuel (Shmuel) J. Plitt, Sasha M.Plitt, Mia S. Plitt, Isabella G. Deaner, Adam D. Deaner, and Alexandra (Ali) C. Deaner.
Graveside services for Dr. Martin J. Pechersky will be held on Wednesday August 25, 2021 at 1:00pm at Sons of Israel Cemetery, Aiken, SC, with Rabbi Zalman Fischer officiating.
