Mrs. Josephine Youmans Ayer Cannon, 87, wife of the late Glenn Alvin Cannon, died October 17, 2002 at Shadow Oaks Assisted Living Community. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 21 at Shandon United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Michael Guffee, and Rev. Patricia Warden will officiate. Burial will be held at Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill, SC. Honorary pallbearers will be the Christian Home Sunday School Class. Mrs. Cannon was the daughter of the late Gertrude Youmans Ayer and Thomas Jefferson Ayer and a native of Furman, SC. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and received a Masters Degree in Social Work from the College of William and Mary in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Cannon lived in Columbia most of her life and moved to Aiken in the last year to be closer to her family. She was an active member of Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia, where she was also a member of the Christian Home Sunday School Class. She was the Executive Director of the South Carolina Children?s Bureau until she retired in 1979. She worked in social services with Epworth Children?s Home, served as a faculty member of the USC School of Social Work, and was one of the original founders of the Kindergarten at Shandon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Cannon received the Order of the Palmetto and was named Social Worker of the Year by the SC National Association of Social Workers. She was a member of the Azalea Garden Club. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lynnda Cannon Bassham and William Frank Bassham, Aiken; sister, Sarah McCoy Ayer Patrick, Rockville, MD; grand daughters and grandson in law, Anne Marshall Wood Frazier and Phillip Daniel Frazier, Aiken; Elizabeth Bassham Fincher, Aiken; Sarah Ayer Bassham, Aiken; and great grandchildren, Gregory Cannon Fincher and William Hammond Fincher, both of Aiken. The family wishes that any memorials be made to the Shandon United Methodist Church Kindergarten, 3407 Devine St. in Columbia, SC 29205.
