Mr. Robert L Downing, 84 of Cumberland Village, Aiken, SC, passed away October 20, 2002 at the Pepper Hill Nursing Facility. A memorial service will be held at Cumberland Village, Wednesday, October 23, at 2pm with Deacon Davies of All Saints Anglican Church Officiating. Interment will be in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater, KS. Born in Coldwater, KS November 30, 1917 to Marvin T. and Mary Powell Downing, Mr. Downing lived most of his life in Southwestern Kansas, before moving to Aiken, SC in September 1999. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and four brothers. He is survived by one brother Edgar Downing of Odessa, TX, and two sisters; Myrtle Sunderland, Westerville, OH and Dorothy Purkey, Wichita, KS as well as his wife of over 66 years, Mary C. Downing of Cumberland Village. Additionally, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. & Marva L. Downing of Aiken, SC, three grandchildren: Marci Pearson of Manhattan, KS, Bradley C. Downing of Peoria, IL and Brian S. Downing of Bloomington, IL as well as three great grandchildren: Christian Pearson and Jamie and Branden Downing as will as a host of friends. Mr. Downing was employed by the Northern Natural Gas Company for 37 years at their compressor plant in Mullinville, KS. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War WII as a member of a PT Boat crew. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #399 of Mullinville for over 57 years. He was active in civic affairs as will as being an associate guardian of the Jobs Daughters for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mullinville United Methodist Church, Mullinville, KS 67209 or the American Cancer Society, 115 Greenville St. SW, Aiken, SC 29801.
